I recently read about two completely different technological innovations coming into the market which got me thinking about gadgets of the future. The first was Leap Motion's recent launch to the consumer market. The second was a discussion about screen sizes on smartphones and tablets.
You may ask, what these two innovations have in common? Well, think Star Wars, the holographic image based communications. We already have video, and now we have spacial recognition of the person as well with Leap Motion able to track the gestures in 3D.Lets take this further one step. Here are the facts:
1. Gestures can be understood and you now don't need more than a pinhole camera for it.
2. A connection to a cellular network (which puts you in touch with virtually the world today) requires a chip no greater than a thumbnail (micro-SIMs, and nano-SIMs are smaller yet)
3. Users have too many gadgets that they have to carry. Laptops, tablets, smartphones (many of these in some cases) are gadgets that almost everyone has. It is tough to decide which to leave at home.
Think back a few years ago, when a similar customer situation was common place. Remember the one-line pagers?
With all of this happening, it is about time that we will soon see an innovation in this area again. Consolidating the various gadgets into one. With no limitation of screen size based on what is available on the device size, you will be able to simple project a 3D image. With 3D gesture recognition taking over from touch based inputs (some of this is available today with projected keyboards and tying that in with Leap Motion's technology should not be too difficult).
Tomorrow is not far away indeed. We will soon hold the capability to work with all our gadgets and stay connected in something as small as a pen that we carry around. Give technological innovations a couple of years and the image above may be commonplace.
